Over the past two decades, Korean dramas have changed from locally consumed television program to global entertainment. This phenomenon happened because of the Hallyu Wave (Korean spreading cultural) that has impacted a gained popularity to their industry, one of them is K-dramas. Hallyu Wave is a cultural spread of Korea that has influenced and entertained many people in the world. This is happening because of the distinctive culture, and the strategy of how their culture can be delivered to non-Koreans. The Hallyu Wave phenomenon did not happen by itself, but it’s delivered by the strategy of how they spread their culture such as promoting their drama by high production, accessible streaming platforms and unique cultural influence.
K-dramas can attract global audience by high production quality of their most dramas that include variety genres, high quality of the actors and the acting, good cinematography, catchy soundtracks and well-structured plots (12-16 episodes). Therefore, the viewers will not lose interest quickly when watching the content and that is why these series is well known in international. The highlight part is also the storylines; they are popular because of the emotional story and dreamy personality of the character.
Also the appearance of the actors make the viewers more engage (good looking and dress well actors) like Byeon Woo-Seok for the iconic man actors and Lee Jieun (IU) for the famous woman actors, The streaming platforms also have a big impact of the International popularity. Because of post-COVID19 pandemic people often searching for entertaining content in social media to fulfill their enjoyment online. There is a lot of platforms that provide K-dramas and easy to access. One of the platforms that provide a bunch of Korean shows and accessible is Netflix, Viki and Disney +. This accessibility allows viewers from different countries to watch K-dramas concurrently, accelerating their global spread and popularity.
The rise of these series is also deeply connected to the broader Hallyu Wave. Korean popular culture including K-pop, films and beauty trends has created a strong interest in Korean society. According to cultural data analysis covering over 1.5 million media sources, Korean content continues to gain across continent attention.
